Robert Pattinson: "I had to become a vampire to find the right woman,"

Pattinson introduced the clips alongside "Mamma Mia!" actress Amanda Seyfried, confirming his current breakout status and watching a brief cut to "Twilight," which was included in the retrospective alongside "The Wrestler," "Iron Man," "High School Musical" and "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button."

"It's insane," Pattinson told MTV News in an exclusive interview from the red carpet before the ceremony. "When they first told me about this, I was like, 'No, no, no, no, no, you're joking — or I'm going to have to do something really stupid like get gunged [slimed]!"

Pattinson appeared to be taking in all the excitement surrounding him at his first trip to the Oscars, ready to make the most of his newly found spotlight. "I don't know what to get out of it," he confessed.

Pattinson arrived in true Oscar fashion, sporting a sleek, standard black tuxedo and wearing his grown-out hair lightly tossed around with a subtle patch of scruff on his chin.

Once onstage, the actor spoke briefly with Seyfried about the subject of love in film. The pair recalled the prevalence of romance in popular film, dating back through 1927's "Wings," the first movie to win a Best Picture Oscar when the awards were presented in 1929.

"What it is, how to get it, how to keep it and what to do when it goes incredibly wrong," Pattinson listed among the perspectives on love that have been addressed over the years on screen. As recent participants in unique romance tales, he and Seyfried noted their own contributions. The London-born star touched on his specific plight as Edward Cullen in "Twilight."

"I had to become a vampire to find the right woman," he joked.
