About Eclipse

Aquí tenéis un artículo del examiner en el que habla un poco del significado del título del tercer libro de la saga y el diseño de la cubierta. No había leído estas declaraciones de Stephenie Meyer, me ha parecido interesante.

The imminence of solar eclipse sparks additional conversation of “Eclipse” title and cover art

July 21 and 22, depending on time zone, marks the most massive total solar eclipse until 2032. Though the eclipse will be most visible on the eastern end of the world, this monumental event may spur an entire thread of “eclipse” conversation between moms and teens interested in the Twilight Saga.

Eclipse, the third book in the saga, details the downward spiral into which Bella descends as she is pulled between her first love, Edward, and her best friend/ new love, Jacob. One can glean from the definition of “eclipse” the meaning behind the title:

Eclipse definition: NOUN: 1. a. The partial or complete obscuring, relative to a designated observer, of one celestial body by another.b. The period of time during which such an obscuration occurs.2. A temporary or permanent dimming or cutting off of light.3. a. A fall into obscurity or disuse; a decline: "A composer . . . often goes into eclipse after his death and never regains popularity" (Time). b. A disgraceful or humiliating end; a downfall:

Furthering the topic, the cover art of Eclipse reveals, not a literal picture of an eclipse, rather a shiny red, torn ribbon. The wilted tulip on the cover of New Moon is the only cover art of the four books that doesn’t have an integral meaning; however there are many theories across the net as to the actual meaning behind the broken ribbon on the front of Eclipse. The general consensus reveals:

The broken ribbon represents the theme of choice. Bella is forced to choose between her love for vampire Edward Cullen, and her friendship/love with werewolf Jacob Black. The ribbon, as mentioned from Meyer, represents the idea that Bella can't break away completely from her human life.

Other theories around the net include:* Eclipse's ribbon represents the reality that there's no such thing as a clean break.* "Eclipse" meaning: "The obscuration of the light of the moon by the intervention of the earth between it and the sun (lunar eclipse) or the obscuration of the light of the sun by the intervention of the moon between it and a point on the earth (solar eclipse)". The Moon and the Sun were battling for the attention of the Earth, which makes sense as throughout the book Jacob was trying to force Edward out of the picture and Edward stood his stance with Bella. Both the Moon and the Sun merging maybe represents a big fight, kind of the climax of the series, maybe?
